In 1885, the town of Stratford (formerly "Little Thames" until 1831), was incorporated into a city. From 1871 -1964, Stratford was the home to many railway shops and was known for the shops. In 1850, there were less than 1,000 people in the town of Stratford. The town hall was also used as a theatre. The oldest theatre in Stratford is the Avon Theatre which has less seats than what the previous theatre had in that building. The town Stratford was named after the city Stratford in England where the famous writer, William Shakespeare, was born.Today, Stratford is known for festivals and Shakespeare.
